Define Based on our readings in this section, write a short paper in which you discuss the/a/your definition of  memory.  Also refer to sample definition paper.  You must have at least 2 references: a personal interview and a reference from an "authoritative" source. You might consider a specific event in history like King's march on Washington, Columbus Day, "A Day Without Immigrants" (May 1, 2006), 9/11.  Since this mini paper is in preparation for your Formal Paper 1, choose a subject that you want to investigate further.  You may use any or all of this in your Formal Paper.

Length: 500 Words (@ 2 pages) + Works Cited page

Due: Tuesday, March 2

  • Printed in 12 pt Courier New or the equivalent
  • Must have Works Cited page

Formal Paper 1  The mini paper is in preparation for your Formal Paper 1: Examine the politics of memory as discussed in reading in Chapter 2.  For example, read descriptions of the "discovery" of the Americas by Ward Churchill, Howard Zinn, and/or Ivan Van Septima and compare them with the "traditional" version.  This is only an example! 

This is a research paper, so you figure out the number of references needed to create a critical discussion of the topic you choose.

Length: 6 pages (figure 250 words per page) + Works Cited page
